Teresa Ribera: “The postponement of COP26 should not relax climate action”

The fourth vice president and minister for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, Teresa Ribera, has pointed out that the postponement of COP 26 “is not good news, although justified”, and should not imply relaxation in guiding our progress in a climate-compatible way.

The climate summit, the United Nations COP26, which was due to be held later this year in Glasgow, is postponed to 2021 due to the situation created by the Covid-19 coronavirus according to a decision agreed yesterday by officials of the UN, the British government and its Italian partners.

For Ribera, working for the concertation of international climate action is very important, and he lamented, that “this year the world faces an unknown global challenge and that we are now learning to address and solve,” he said Thursday in a statement.

“This situation undermines the energy and needs to work seriously to respond to the call of COP 26.”

It is therefore “justified and understandable” the decision to postpone the summit, said the minister, for whom this global pandemic should not mean any relaxation in the objective of all to orient our progress towards climate ambition.

Finally, Teresa Ribera stressed that the recovery and relaunch of economies and the pattern of social coexistence will find in climate solutions a space of well-being for all.
