Electric vehicle registrations will rise by 55% if the Government approves the Moves Plan this month

Registrations of pure electric cars in 2020 would grow by 55%, to 38,000 units, in case the Government approves during this month the new edition of the Moves Plan, according to the most conservative estimates of the Business Association for the Development and Promotion of Electric Mobility (Aedive) and the National Association of Sellers of Motor Vehicles, Repair and Spare Parts (Ganvam).

Registrations of pure electric cars fell in May for the second consecutive month, registering a decrease of 58.9%, to stand at 370 units.

Electric motorcycles account for 75% of electric vehicle registrations in May, with an increase of 256% and a total of 1,625 units, of which 1,340 were acquired by the rental channel.

The idea of the Executive of Pedro Sánchez is to approve the second edition of the Moves Plan, which will have a budget of 65 million euros, tomorrow in the Council of Ministers, as Europa Press advanced.

In this way, and although the sales of pure electric vehicles of all types of vehicles increased by 8.9% in May due to the pull of the renewal of fleets of electric motorcycles to respond to the demand for shared mobility services, the impact of the coronavirus on this market has seen its growth forecasts for 2020 truncated.

Thus, to comply with the phases proposed in the Integrated National Energy and Climate Plan (PNIEC), Aedive and Ganvam foresaw a 170% increase in electric registrations, reaching 65,000 units at the end of the year. However, today, without incentives to demand yet, these estimates are cut to around 28,000 units, which represents a discreet increase of 15%.

Thus, the Data for May show that time is pressing, especially when after the publication of the bases of the new edition of Moves by the Institute for the Diversification and Saving of Energy (IDAE) and in the absence of a national management of the funds that accelerates its entry into force, each autonomous community will have to outline its own plan.

On the other hand, both associations recalled the need to approve the final text of the Climate Change Law, currently in the parliamentary processing phase, to activate the working table as soon as possible that, with the participation of the different agents of the sector, allows to design an effective and coordinated roadmap towards decarbonization.

For Aedive and Ganvam, the milestones on which we must get to work in a coordinated manner are; that Spain is able to attract industrial and technological projects; that administrations act as an example in the transformation and modernisation of fleets; that a tax reform be carried out in line with the objectives of the Climate Change Bill; that a training and specialization plan for professionals be carried out according to the new requirements of the automotive and mobility sectors to generate quality employment and to prepare the different sectors involved in the value chain in the face of the challenges of digital and ecological transformation.

In this sense, they highlighted the role of business associations as agglutinators of all the actors involved in achieving the objectives. The president of Ganvam, Raúl Palacios, has assured that “listening to the sector before legislating will avoid distortions in the market that move us away from the goals set and will allow the initiatives to adjust to the real demand without leaving anyone behind in this transition”.

For his part, for the general director of Aedive, Arturo Pérez de Lucia, “if the industrial, technological and service revolution in the automotive and mobility was evident at the beginning of 2020, recent events in Spain show more than ever the need to face as an opportunity the challenge of a market that is inexorably directed towards the electric vehicle, connected, shared and autonomous.”
