The Vice President for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, Teresa Ribera, reported on Thursday that the Government will develop a decree with regulation around the recharging points, with maintenance and management obligations.
In his speech at the Forum Nueva Economía meeting, Ribera said that this summer he has received “300 or 400 messages from ordinary citizens worried” about the lack of electric recharging points, noting that this sector “has not yet made a great qualitative leap”, although, he said “with the Moves Plan the demand for electric cars has skyrocketed”.
On the other hand, he also pointed out that “there are qualitative advances in terms of batteries”, such as their management at the end of their useful life or “the venial value of these vehicles”, issues for which the Government, he has assured, is “in full dialogue with the sectors and industries to identify opportunities and bottlenecks”.
These are some of the aspects in which, in his opinion, the different public administrations must “be more proactive” to move towards this new mobility.
“Spain cannot afford to miss the train of the industrial transformation of mobility, because it has everything it needs to be a leading actor. It has aluminum, steel, engines, assembles cars, but also produces motorcycles, vans, buses… He has the logistics and the will to do it differently,” he said.
“Achievable and probably surmountable” goals despite Covid
On the other hand, the fourth vice president of the Government has rejected that the pandemic could frustrate the objectives of decarbonized mobility established in the Executive’s roadmap for the fight against climate change.
“I believe that the objectives we set for ourselves are still valid, achievable and probably surmountable,” said Ribera, before adding that the transformation process “is not linear.” “Once the process of change is activated, it accelerates,” he said, adding that his “impression” is that “in mobility changes are taking place at great speed.”
“The objective is still in force and is a demand that we hear very clearly in these months of departure after the confinement,” said Ribera, pointing out “the transformation of Paris, which has been taken over by the bicycle and pedestrians.” “We have to ask ourselves why it costs us so much in some cities when there is also a real demand,” he said.
