Since the IEA review in 2015, Spain has resolved the tariff deficit in its electricity and gas sectors and has closed all of its coal mines.
The current Spanish framework for energy and climate is based on the objectives of national climate neutrality for 2050, 100% renewable energy in the electricity mix and 97% renewable energy in the total energy mix. It focuses on the massive development of renewable energy, particularly solar and wind power; energy efficiency; electrification; and renewable hydrogen. Spain’s total energy mix continues to be largely dominated by fossil fuels, especially in the transport, industry and construction sectors.
The current post-COVID-19 context offers an important opportunity to advance the energy transition investments planned for the next three years, since Spain will be one of the main beneficiaries of the EU recovery funds.
