US Electricity Sector Outlook 2021

According to the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA) report, the speed and scope of the US energy transition to renewable energy will accelerate in the next two to three years. Cleaner, lower-cost wind and solar power, along with battery storage, will drive fossil fuels off the market. Coal generating capacity has fallen 32% from its peak 10 years ago. Gas benefited in the 2010s from the fracking revolution, but the sharp increase in gas flaring capacity in that period has leveled off. Wind capacity has doubled since 2012, and solar capacity has doubled since 2016.
