Geothermal energy is the least land-intensive and cost-effective source of energy storage. However, it currently brings only a fraction of its potential, although the IEA forecasts that geothermal energy capacity will double globally in the coming years everywhere except Europe, which would have dire consequences for European energy security, competitiveness and socio-economic prosperity.
