The Strategic Framework for Energy and Climate of the Government of Spain lays the foundations for the modernization of the Spanish economy, the creation of employment, the leadership position of Spain in clean energies and technologies that will dominate the next decade, the development of the rural environment , improving the health of people and the environment, and social justice.
The National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan (PNIEC) 2021-2030 designs Spain’s decarbonisation path for the next decade in coherence with the Paris Agreement and the European Green Deal, a fundamental piece of community policies for the reactivation of the economy against the effects of COVID-19.
The measures established in the PNIEC represent an intermediate milestone to achieve climate neutrality before the middle of the century, a commitment that Europe has set for itself and that Spain has acquired through the Climate and Environmental Emergency Declaration approved by the Council of Ministers in January 2020.
As a continuation of the path started by the PNIEC, the Executive has prepared the draft of the Long-Term Decarbonization Strategy (ELP), which sets the lines to follow to ensure that Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions in Spain are neutral no later than 2050, while including the opportunities offered by decarbonisation in terms of employment, investment attraction, economic activation, modernization and improvement of business and industrial competitiveness.
The document outlines, sufficiently in advance and under criteria of social cohesion, equity and fair transition, the trajectory that would allow final energy consumption -including that of buildings, transport and economic sectors- to be fully renewable by mid-century, improving the health and quality of life of citizens and influencing the conservation of biodiversity and adaptation to climate change.
