Von der Leyen awaits the final green light from the European Parliament to her team of commissioners

The European Parliament will comply this Wednesday with the final procedure necessary for Ursula von der Leyen’s new European Commission to get into operation on December 1, almost half a year after the European elections and with a hemicycle more fragmented and unstable than in previous legislatures.

The plenary session of the European Parliament will vote this Wednesday at noon on whether to give the green light to Von der Leyen’s college of commissioners, whom she has scrutinized individually during the month of November in a highly politicised process that has been on the verge of derailing the start of the new EU executive.

The ‘impasse’ ended up being resolved in stoppage time with a weak agreement between the PP, Social Democrats and Liberals to lift the crossed vetoes that each group maintained against its political rivals and move forward with the start of the legislature, but the question of how stable this majority will be in the next five years remains in the air.
