Half of global CO₂ emissions from fossil fuels in 2023 were linked to just 36 companies, a study by British think tank InfluenceMap revealed on Wednesday.
The centre, which provides analysis to investors, companies and the media on energy and climate change issues, released up-to-date data on the largest global CO₂ emitters.
Those figures are drawn from Carbon Majors, a historical database on the world’s largest producers of oil, gas, coal and cement from 1854 to 2023. Key data from 2023 includes that emissions from the world’s largest oil, gas, coal, and cement producers increased that year, with more than 50% of these emissions linked to just 36 companies.
