The US will accelerate the fight against climate change, but asks China for the same

The New Special Envoy of the Biden Administration for Climate Change, John Kerry, said today at the Davos Forum that the United States will resume its fight against global warming “after four years of unforgivable absence”, although he called on China to also accelerate its environmental plans.

“We will announce today at a press conference the most massive mobilization in the history of our government in environmental policies,” Kerry stressed, adding: “There are nine years left to make decisions that avoid the worst consequences of the climate crisis, we enter a decisive decade for action.”

In this regard, the former U.S. Secretary of State Said that Europe has been in recent years the leader in the environmental fight, in the face of the immobility of the previous Administration of Donald Trump, and considered that china’s recent announcement to achieve zero emissions by 2060 is positive, but not enough.

“We hope to join China in the fight and get them to reach that goal much sooner than in 2060,” Kerry said in his teleconference speech, since this time, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all participants in the forum do so virtually.

He recalled that China continues to finance 70 percent of thermal plants, when the world “has to eliminate the use of coal at a rate five times faster than today.”

Kerry also indicated that, after a 2020 in which emissions of carbon dioxide (the main gas causing climate change) were probably reduced, there will be a rebound in 2021, so “we must reduce them by half in 2030” and accelerate reforestation, the promotion of clean energy and the use of electric vehicles.

The veteran American politician stressed that, “despite the excuses of deniers and procrastinators,” the fight against climate change does not mean renouncing economic development, but presents opportunities and, in the United States alone, could generate up to two million jobs.

“The proof is that today the most valued globally company is Tesla, dedicated to the manufacture of electric vehicles,” he argued.

Kerry stressed that the commitment of the new US president, Joe Biden, to the Paris Agreement was demonstrated by approving, hours after being invested, the return of the US. to that climate pact.

“Climate will be at the center of the policies of all our federal agencies and we will direct them to the development of climate plans and to end the financing of fossil fuel projects,” he said.

“We join climate efforts with humility and ambition: humility because we know we have wasted four years with an unforgivable absence, but also because we know that no country can fight alone,” concluded a Kerry who called for the support of the private sector in this cause.
