UN adopts Pact for the Future to build a better world

In a world beset by “growing existential catastrophic risks” such as wars, climate change and poverty, the leaders of the 193 UN countries adopted a “Pact for the Future” of humanity on Sunday, despite the opposition of a handful of countries such as Russia, Venezuela or Nicaragua.

“I convened this Summit because the challenges of the 21st century must be solved with 21st century solutions,” said UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, after the adoption of this text containing 56 actions to address the “greatest challenges of our time”.

These challenges range from the reform of the UN Security Council, the global financial architecture, peacekeeping or climate change, to more innovative issues such as artificial intelligence.
