The electricity bill will inform about polluting emissions

The National Commission of Markets and Competition (CNMC) has approved on Monday a resolution that obliges marketers to inform users in the electricity bill about the origin of their energy. From next April, companies will have to include information on the origin of the electricity consumed and its impact on the environment. This is clear from a resolution recently published in the Official State Gazette (BOE).

The April receipts will report on the energy produced from January 1, 2021. Marketers will report in a table on the technology used in energy production (renewable, natural gas, coal, nuclear, etc., and their percentage), and elsewhere they will note their energy rating, on a scale from A to G for carbon dioxide (CO) emissions.2) and for radioactive waste generated.

According to the statement, this to visually reflect the origin of the energy will be used a sectoral diagram, which reflects the “production mix of the marketer in question, limiting the comparison with the national mix to a table in which the contrast of the contribution of each technology is shown, for the marketer and for the whole country”.

In the CNMC statement, it is reported that the units used to show co2 equivalent emissions and radioactive waste have also been changed so that integers, more “easily readable”, are used.

The labelling of electricity, based on the System of Guarantees of Origin of electricity, is the only tool contemplated in the regulation for a marketing company to inform its customers of the origin of the electricity it sells and its environmental impact. Therefore, to avoid duplication or confusion, any communication from the marketing companies in relation to the aforementioned environmental attributes must be in accordance with the data that characterize each marketer in its labeling.
