For more than a decade, much of the most alarmist news about climate change shared the same ingredient. It doesn’t matter if we were talking about cities submerged under the sea, skyrocketing temperatures or planetary catastrophes at the end of the century. Behind many of these headlines always appeared the same protagonist: a climate scenario known as RCP8.5. Now, the scientific system itself in charge of developing the scenarios used by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has just recognized that those extreme hypotheses are no longer plausible. In other words: the scenarios that for years fueled thousands of studies, reports and headlines have officially been sent into retirement.
