International Court of Justice to advise on climate change and State responsibility

One of the world’s foremost courts, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) will advise states on climate change: responsibilities to curb global emissions and the legal consequences of inaction. This unprecedented consensus decision was reached in a debate on the issue at the UN.

At a general assembly meeting in New York, governments passed a resolution recognizing the enormous challenge of climate change. And it calls on the ICJ to provide an advisory opinion on how it intersects with international law.
