Spanish electro-intensive companies are not contracting green electricity through purchase agreements (PPAs) in the face of falling prices on the spot market and the intermittent nature of supply, several experts said on Tuesday.
Industries “are not contracting many renewable PPAs” because the offers on the market are not attractive, said Juan Antonio Labat, director general of the Business Federation of the Spanish Chemical Industry (Feique). Industrialists can currently benefit from prices of EUR 0/MWh or very low at many hours of the day, caused by the Spanish renewable generation boom, which discourages taking risks of contracting volumes in PPAs in the long term, he added.
The country’s renewables boom already plunged daily electricity prices to EUR 13.67/MWh in April, making it the cheapest month on record.
