The European Union will ban combustion cars from 2035

The agreement of the Twenty-seven sets a 55% reduction in carbon emissions in this decade to achieve climate neutrality in 2050

Negotiators from the European Parliament, the European Council (EU member states) and the European Commission reached a preliminary agreement on Thursday to ban the sale of new cars and vans with combustion engines from 2035.

“Pending formal adoption, the co-legislators agreed on the CO emissions reduction target.2 55% for new cars and 50% for new vans by 2030 compared to 2021 levels” and “100% for new cars and vans by 2035,” the European Council said in a statement.

This is the first piece of legislation to be adopted in the “Fit for 55” package to decarbonise the EU by 2050.

The agreement thus marks a major transition for Europe, which will leave behind the mode of transport that has dominated the region since it was invented in the nineteenth century. “European manufacturers are already demonstrating that they are ready to take this step, with an ever-expanding offer of affordable electric cars,” said Frans Timmermans, Executive First Vice-President of the European Commission.
