The European Commission proposed on Tuesday that the European Union adopt a “net” cut in CO₂ emissions of 90% compared to 1990 as a target for 2040, which implies efforts in all economic areas and decarbonizing the energy sector by the end of the next decade.
To achieve this, Brussels on Tuesday launched initiatives to accelerate the deployment of technologies that capture carbon from the atmosphere and to boost the market for small nuclear reactors.
The EU executive hopes to achieve this “net” cut of 90% if the gross reduction in CO₂ is added to the emissions that the EU can absorb through natural sinks such as forests and through the deployment of technologies such as carbon dioxide capture and storage.
