EU Environment Committee approves banning diesel and petrol cars by 2035

The ENVI committee has approved shortening by 5 years the ban on the sale of polluting cars in the EU from January 1, 2035

The Environment Committee (ENVI) of the European Parliament has today approved the ban on the sale of new cars that emit polluting gases in the member countries of the European Union from 2035. This means reducing by five years the previous deadline that was established in the year 2040.

The result of the vote must be ratified by the plenary of the European Parliament, where the decisions taken by the MEPs participating in the Commission are not usually changed. The vote also took the decision to ban new cars that move with e-fuels (synthetic fuels that are not derived from oil) as intended by supercar brands such as Porsche, which is investing in this type of fuel so that its customers of classic vehicles can continue to circulate with them.

More restrictions

Another novelty introduced is that the emission reduction targets that were set at 15% compared to 2021, are reduced by 20% for passenger cars in 2025, while for vans and light commercial vehicles it continues to stand at 15%. The emission limits of passenger cars are from 2021 at 95 gr/km of_CO2 and 147 gr/km of_CO2 for vans.

But the novelties are not there. It has also been approved that from 2030 vehicles exceeding 123 gr/km of_CO2 cannot be marketed. To contextualize this data, the Volkswagen T-Roc, the Volkswagen SUV that was the best-selling in Spain last April could only sell its TSI 1.0 gasoline version that homologates 123 gr / km of CO₂ and the TDI of 110 hp that homologates 122 gr / km of CO₂. The rest of the motorizations that it has for sale would be prohibited.

What has not finally gone ahead as EL MUNDO published yesterday is the establishment of more restrictive intermediate emission limits in 2027 and 2030, giving greater flexibility to the automotive sector to reduce emissions. These two sections, proposed by environmentalists, have been rejected thanks to the votes of the Spanish MEPs of the PSOE and Ciudadanos.
