The European Union (EU) could include LNG in its border CO₂ adjustment mechanism (CBAM) once global production of the liquefied fuel rises and the market relaxes, which is forecast for 2027, but the price impact would be less than EUR 1/MWh, an analyst at Wood Mackenzie said.
The new tax, if passed, would aim to protect EU producers from being at a competitive disadvantage against other countries where CO₂ does not have a price.
“The EU is unlikely to take drastic action before it is sure that its supply is secure,” Kateryna Filippenko, head of global gas at consulting and intelligence firm Wood Mackenzie, said at the Gastech conference in Houston.
