The emission regulations trigger the sale of electric cars by 283%

The European emission regulations have shot up sales of electric cars in the Valencian Community by 283% in January and February, making this region one of the main national markets in electric mobility, concentrating 12% of registrations.

The National Association of Sellers of Motor Vehicles, Repair and Spare Parts (GANVAM) has offered these data in the forum “Sellers and workshops before the objective of 95 grams of CO2 / km”, held this Thursday at Feria Valencia on the occasion of the Vehicle Fair Selection Occasion to be held from April 3 to 5.

Thus, in January and February in the Valencian Community 364 electric cars were registered, 283% more than in the same period of 2019, and only in February there were 206, 243% more than in February of last year.

The province of Valencia, which accounts for 52% of registrations in the region, is one of the four in Spain with the most electric vehicles registered in February, behind Madrid, Barcelona and Toledo.

In February in Valencia, 104 electric units were registered, 248% more than the same month of 2019, as reported by Ganvam in a statement, which specifies that it must be taken into account that the starting figures are low.

On the contrary, combustion engine vehicles plummet and sales of diesel passenger cars have fallen by 58.9% in February and stand at 817 units – they represent 22% of the sale of new passenger cars; and gasoline fell by 59% to 2,200 units – they represent more than 60% of the market.

According to Ganvam, this decline in diesel vehicle registrations “complicates” meeting European emissions targets. In fact, the CO2 emissions of vehicles registered in Europe in 2019 closed with the highest average since 2014, standing at 121 grams per kilometer.

For the executive president of Ganvam, Raúl Palacios, the rise in average CO2 emissions has a “clear and direct” correlation with the fall in demand for diesel vehicles, which emit up to 25% less CO2 than gasoline vehicles.

This situation makes the electric in the “fast way” to reach the emissions targets and, according to Ganvam’s estimates, the Valencian Community should end the year with about 7,800 units of electric vehicles of all kinds, which means practically multiplying by six the records of last year.

For the association, although barriers such as unit cost per vehicle, autonomy or charging infrastructures are being saved by the impulse of private initiative, a firm commitment by the Administration is necessary to accelerate the electrification of the park.

To this end, the exemption or reduction of VAT on electricity is an effective measure, as well as adjusting the second edition of the Moves plan in the case of scrapping to the reality of demand.
