Latin America and the Caribbean Climate Week 2022 will be held next July in Santo Domingo

The dates for Latin America and the Caribbean Climate Week 2022 (LACCW 2022) have already been announced. The UN Climate Change Platform for Regional Collaboration has confirmed that the event will be held from July 18 to 22 in Santo Domingo, and will be sponsored by the Government of the Dominican Republic. This marks the return of climate weeks in person in the region, and opens the opportunity for governments and stakeholders to work together to combat climate change.

LACCW 2022 brings together stakeholders from the region with the potential to turn the tide on the climate challenge. The event opens a space for governments, private sector leaders, development organizations, youth and civil society to come together in solution-oriented dialogues, find common ground and forge partnerships for climate action. The Action Hub, an action hub, will present inspiring examples of actions already being taken to avoid the worst climate effects and build resilient communities.

UN Climate Change Executive Secretary Patricia Espinosa said: “Thanks to the important decisions taken at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) held last year in Glasgow, the implementation of the Paris Agreement is accelerating. Regional collaboration has emerged as a driver of global progress, and the Glasgow Climate Pact encourages UN agencies and public and private sector leaders to work together towards credible and lasting climate action. With an eye on COP27 in Sharm el-Sheikh next November, LACCW 2022 will bring together key stakeholders to advance regional climate action, and thus help create momentum for a strong outcome in Egypt.”

LACCW 2022 is sponsored by the Government of the Dominican Republic and organized by UN Climate Change, and has the collaboration of the United Nations Development Program, the United Nations Environment Program and the World Bank Group. Partners in the region are the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), CAF-Development Bank of Latin America and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).

Ahead of the July event in Santo Domingo, the Dominican Republic’s Minister of Environment and Natural Resources, Orlando Jorge Mera, said: “Latin America and the Caribbean Climate Week will focus on the realities of climate change we face in the region. Our societies and economies are severely affected by climate impacts, and we know that climate action is a path to healthy development. Cities, businesses and communities must work together to find solutions. We hope that Climate Week will serve to discuss our shared risks, identify these emerging opportunities and work together on solutions.”

For his part, the Executive Vice President of the National Council for Climate Change of the Dominican Republic, Max Puig, said that “the Climate Week of Latin America and the Caribbean is a great opportunity to achieve the real, deep and lasting involvement of all economic, political and social sectors, a key element to advance towards the inclusive transition that our societies need to face climate change, both to mitigate its causes and to adapt to its effects, this time, from a perspective of regional cooperation.”

LACCW 2022 is part of the 2022 Regional Climate Weeks series, which will continue with Africa Climate Week 2022 later this year. MENACW 2022 kicked off the series in Dubai last March, and featured nearly 4,000 people over four days.
