Teresa Ribera will be part of the ILO Advisory Council to promote the “Climate Action for Employment” initiative

June 24, 2020- The fourth Vice-President of the Government and Minister for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, Teresa Ribera, has accepted the invitation of the Director General of the International Labour Organization (ILO), Guy Ryder, to be part of the International Advisory Council created by this specialized agency of the United Nations to promote the initiative “Climate Action for Employment”.

In a letter, Ryder thanks Spain for its “leadership and commitment to place jobs and livelihoods as central elements of the global response to the challenge of climate change”, and asks it to be part of the Council created to put these premises into practice. “The ILO looks forward to working closely with you to take far-reaching action on climate change, promote social justice and promote decent work and just transition,” adds the ILO Director-General.

In addition to Vice-President Ribera, the ILO has invited other ministers and senior officials of the International Organization of Employers and the International Trade Union Confederation to join this Council, which already has a mandate.

The Climate Action for Jobs initiative is an ambitious global program promoted by Spain and Peru on behalf of the United Nations and executed by the International Labour Organization (ILO), which aims to provide a clear roadmap to implement just transition plans at the national level through social dialogue, creating decent work and green jobs.

Ribera thanked Rider for the invitation and the determined impulse given to the Climate Action for Employment initiative, and stressed in his acceptance response that, for the Government of Spain, “it is an honor to contribute to the transition to a carbon neutral economy is carried out in a fair and inclusive manner, offering employment opportunities for the affected territories and workers.

The Government of Spain has set up an Institute for just transition (ITJ), an autonomous body attached to MITECO that, among other things, manages and supervises the preparation and execution of just transition agreements, in consensus with regional and local administrations, companies and trade unions to guarantee the maintenance of employment and the dynamization of the economic and industrial sector of the territories affected by the transition.
