Only 20% of countries have submitted their new plans to comply with the Paris Agreement

• The list of countries reporting new contributions with additional gas reductions through 2035 is expected to increase this week, ahead of the U.N.-convened climate summit
• António Guterres to issue new call for climate action tomorrow

Only 20% of countries have so far submitted to the United Nations their plans, new or updated, to meet the requirements of the Paris Agreement, which obliges them to present their new initiatives to reduce greenhouse gases and combat global warming this year. Only 38 of the 196 signatory countries to the Paris Agreement (which account for less than 25% of emissions) have so far complied with that obligation. Tomorrow the United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, is expected to call on countries to communicate these new plans. However, the delays and the few announcements made so far bode badly. The United States, Russia and Saudi Arabia, together with the advance of far-right parties, are the great obstacle to relaunching climate action.
