Sánchez warns in New York about climate change: “We are running out of time”

The Spanish government has tried to take advantage of the UN climate change summit to place itself among the world’s leading countries in this matter. Pedro Sánchez, who has always placed the ecological transition as a priority – he created a specific ministry and put Teresa Ribera, one of the world’s greatest specialists, in charge – offered concrete commitments in New York, during the summit against climate change. One of them will be the increase in the money that Spain allocates to the so-called “green fund”, in line with other promises of European presidents such as the French Emmanuel Macron. Sánchez announced in his speech that Spain will allocate 150 million euros for this fund over the next four years.

The Spanish president launched in New York an especially harsh message about the threats of climate change: “We are facing a climate emergency, we are running out of time. There may be no turning back, intensifying our action has never been as critical as it is now. I want my country to be part of this change,” he said in the morning, at a side event of the summit.

In his official speech, the president finished off this idea: “There can be no excuses for inaction. We will not be able to claim ignorance when our children ask us why we did not do everything necessary to change the situation. Spain will be at the forefront of action that puts people at the centre.”

Sánchez has taken to the UN his plan against climate change, led by Ribera, which includes ambitious commitments applauded by the European Commission as the guarantee of reaching 2030 with a 20% reduction in emissions over 1990 levels, which will involve reducing a third of greenhouse gases. Sánchez promised that by that year, 2030, 74% of the electricity generated in the country will come from renewable sources, and 100% in 2050.

“Spain is committed. We have chosen this path. We need the planet to resist for the next generations, we have the future in our hands,” insisted Sánchez, who also defends that this transition has to be fair in the distribution of costs that will have such a strong change. “We can’t leave anyone behind. In a process like this there are always victims and losers. It is about that there are them, that this challenge is not primed with the weakest, “insisted Sánchez.

The president, who has placed himself on the side of those who defend this type of policies against those who stand with the administration of Donald Trump, who rejects even the objectives of the Paris summit, said that thanks to this plan new jobs will be created, between 250,000 and 364,000 in Spain alone.
