Ribera points to pressure to “look the other way” despite more evidence of climate change

The executive vice-president of the European Commission, Teresa Ribera, pointed out on Tuesday the “paradox” that the “pressure to look the other way” is growing in the face of greater evidence of climate change and its “most devastating” impacts in Europe and other regions of the world.

“We live in a paradox. Every year the evidence becomes stronger. The impacts are more devastating. And yet, the pressure to look the other way, to delay, to pretend that it is not urgent, is growing in many places,” said the Executive Vice-President for a Clean, Just and Competitive Transition in her opening speech at the ceremony commemorating the EU Day for the Victims of the Global Climate Crisis. A ceremony held at the headquarters of the European Commission for the third consecutive year and which was established for the first time after the devastating floods that hit Central Europe, especially Belgium, Germany and France in 2021.
