The Polish government said today that it will hold talks in Seoul on its “next major nuclear project” next Monday, after the concession of the country’s first nuclear plant went to the American Westinghouse Electric.
Deputy Prime Minister Jacek Sasin made the announcement on his Twitter account. “We are committed to strengthening Poland’s energy security,” he stressed.
Although he did not go into details, presumably the negotiations in Seoul are related to the Korean state company KHNP, which had competed against Westinghouse for the concession of the first plant, along with the French EDF.
After Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki announced yesterday the choice of Westinghouse’s nuclear division to build the first reactor, Climate and Energy Minister Anna Moskwa said the government has already received all the necessary documents from the United States.
“The materials and the resolution have been handed over to the Council of Ministers. The next phase is design,” the minister wrote on her Twitter account.
As announced last year, Poland’s first nuclear power plant will be built in Choczewo, a town of about 5,000 inhabitants in the north of the country, on the Baltic Sea coast, and the first reactor is scheduled to come into operation in 2033.
The government led by the ultraconservative Law and Justice Party (PiS) wants to build a total of six nuclear power plants, with a capacity of six to nine gigawatts, in order to reduce dependence on coal and with itCO2 emissions.
The plans of the Executive are to invest more than 30,000 million euros in the construction of these six plants, of which it expects to contribute 23% of the energy consumed in the country before 2040.
Poland currently produces 78% of its energy from coal, which causes environmental pollution problems and places this country far from the polluting emissions targets set by Europe.
