Nuclear energy: from reviled to essential for Europe’s electric future

After the war in Ukraine and with the electrification needs of economies, nuclear energy has become a more than necessary technology to meet decarbonization goals.

Nuclear energy seemed to have its days numbered after the Fukushima accident. Two of the countries that promoted atomic energy abandoned this energy. One, Japan, out of obligation, and the other, Germany, by political decision.

It was mortally wounded, but the need to electrify economies and increase security of supply after the war in Ukraine has revived nuclear energy in the world, especially in Europe. In recent years, the European Commission has intensified the recognition of nuclear energy as a key technology to strengthen industrial competitiveness, guarantee security of supply and, as a consequence, advance in decarbonisation. From its inclusion in the green taxonomy to the latest electrification plans, Brussels has been taking a series of steps that consolidate the role of nuclear energy within the European energy strategy.
