Morocco is one of the best placed countries for green hydrogen production, according to a report by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). Other nations cited as the best placed in this ranking are the United States, Chile, Saudi Arabia and Australia. To decarbonise industry and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, Le360 stresses, green hydrogen has become a priority in the energy strategies of many countries, including the most developed ones.
IRENA estimates that by 2050, hydrogen use could reach up to 12% of global energy consumption, “while “traditional oil and gas trade is in decline.” Green hydrogen is produced from renewable electricity (wind and solar) through a process of water electrolysis (a process that breaks down water into dioxygen and hydrogen gas). It is distinguished from “gray” hydrogen, which is produced from fossil energy sources.
Morocco, which positioned itself quite early in this sector, is one of the countries susceptible to producing green hydrogen at low cost, estimates the international agency, by capitalizing on the considerable potential of renewable energies, in particular solar and wind. It should thus move from the status of net importer of energy to that of exporter, thanks to the development of green hydrogen.
The report also underlines that this sector would lead to the creation of more than 15,000 jobs. IRENA recalls that Germany has concluded bilateral agreements on green hydrogen with several potential suppliers, including Morocco.
“Countries that manage to become major exporters of green hydrogen and derived fuels should also gain geostrategic importance,” IRENA summarizes in its report.
