The Sonora Sustainable Energy Plan is based on a national mining industry for the exploitation of lithium and the construction of a solar power plant
The Government of Mexico will present at COP27, to be held in Egypt, the Sustainable Energy Sound Plan based on a national mining industry for the exploitation of lithium and the construction of the largest and most important solar power plant in Latin America.
This was announced by the Secretary of Foreign Affairs in Mexico, Marcelo Ebrard, when presenting the results of the meeting between Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and the US presidential envoy for climate, John Kerry, who were with energy and environmental officials of both countries at the Government Palace in Sonora.
“President López Obrador explained John Kerry that the Sonora Plan is not only important for the production of lithium or renewable energies, but because everything works together and this will be a model to follow that will be replicated in other States of Mexico, that is why we will take it to the United Nations Conference on Climate Change as our most important contribution. ” assured the Chancellor.
Recently, the Congress of the Union made a reform to the Mining Law to nationalize the exploitation of lithium, an indispensable mineral in the manufacture of batteries for electronic devices such as smartphones, computers and electric vehicles, considering that recent explorations found in Sonora some of the largest lithium deposits in the world.
Within the Sonora Plan, the progress in the construction of the Puerto Peñasco Photovoltaic Plant was also presented, a 2,000-hectare line with solar panels that will serve to supply energy to millions of homes in northwestern Mexico and even export electricity to California in the United States.
The Sustainable Energy Plan is divided into four axes: the exploitation of lithium and electromobility, the liquefaction of natural gas, the generation of photovoltaic energy and the conversion of the port of Guaymas into an international charging point.
