Methane emissions in part of the U.S. triple the official estimate

60% of methane emissions are generated by human activity

A study published in the journal Nature suggests that methane emissions in parts of the United States are three times higher than the official estimate and estimates that this represents an annual social cost of $9.3 billion, in addition to business losses for the sector. The study, led by researcher Evan Sherwin of Stanford University’s Department of Energy, Science and Engineering, is based on one million measurements taken in aerial surveys of six oil and gas producing regions in the country, combined with computer simulations.
