Limiting methane leaks could slow climate change

More than 8 million tons of methane escaped in 2023, according to data from the journal Science.

The global energy industry has lost more than 8 million tonnes of methane in 2023, according to an article published in the journal ‘Science’. This gas, the second largest cause of global warming after carbon dioxide (CO2), escapes mainly through failures in machinery and pipes, as well as a lack of interest or resources to prevent these leaks. Limiting these emissions could provide a temporary respite in the fight against climate change, allowing time to reduce CO2 emissions, which are more difficult to eliminate.
