Methane emissions from fossil fuels continue “at very high levels”, warns the IEA

Emissions of methane, a greenhouse gas, remain “at very high levels” in fossil fuels, the International Energy Agency (IEA) warned on Monday.

In 2025, record production in the fossil energy sector (oil, coal, gas) caused 35% of methane emissions from human activity, or 124 million tonnes (Mt), the IEA estimated.

On Monday, the agency presented its annual “Global Methane Tracker” report on the occasion of an international meeting in Paris, organized within the framework of the French presidency of the G7. In a slight increase compared to 2024 (121 Mt), these emissions “are still at very high levels”, close to the records of 2019, dominated by the oil sector (45 Mt), ahead of coal (43 Mt) and gas (36 Mt).

There is “no sign that global energy-related methane emissions will have declined by 2025,” the IEA stresses.
