The new behaviors being asked of consumers to combat climate change account for about one-third of the emissions reductions required to curb global warming.
The fight against climate change requires a major social transformation and very significant changes in the behaviour of citizens. This is essential to achieve net-zero emissions by mid-century, as technological change alone will not be enough. Studies by the UK-based Centre for Climate Change and Social Transformations (CAST) have concluded that the behavioural change being asked of consumers accounts for about a third of the required emissions reductions, with the rest coming from changes within companies. communities and governments. CAST is one of the main European benchmarks in research on sustainability and human behaviour in the face of the climate crisis. Its director, Lorraine Whitmarsh, was the protagonist of the new edition of the Sustainability cycle, interviewed by the deputy director of La Vanguardia, Enric Sierra. The interview was streamed through the website of this newspaper, which is the promoter of the aforementioned cycle, aimed at giving voice to the most outstanding leaders of the struggle in defense of the environment.
