The European steel industry says it is “on the verge of collapse” and asks Brussels for a plan

The steel industry’s call comes on the same day that the European Parliament approved the composition of the second European Commission to be chaired by Ursula von der Leyen.
The European steel association, EUROFER, today launched a cry for help for the European Union to help in the green transition to the steel industry to save an industry that it says is “on the verge of collapse”. “Europe’s deindustrialisation is accelerating, with steel, automotive, renewables and batteries on the verge of collapse. Without immediate action, Europe’s manufacturing base will disappear,” EUROFER CEO Axel Egert said in a statement. The steel industry’s call comes on the same day that the European Parliament approved the composition of the second European Commission to be chaired by Ursula von der Leyen, who has set among her priorities to support European industry in the transition to clean technologies. On the eve, the steel giant Arcelormittal announced that it will postpone its investments aimed at decarbonising its activities in Europe, which included the construction of low-CO₂ factories in several European countries, such as Germany, France and Belgium.
