The explosion of tourism now accounts for 8.8% of globalCO2 emissions

Twice as many as the rest of the global economy, study finds

The rapid expansion of travel demand in recent years means that tourism now accounts for 8.8% of global greenhouse gas emissions. These emissions grew at a rate of 3.5% per year between 2009 and 2019 to reach 5.2 gigatonnes of CO₂, which is twice as much as the rest of the world economy, according to a study by five researchers and published in the journal ‘Nature Communications’. The study involved researchers from universities in Australia and Sweden, who analyzed domestic and international travel in 175 countries.
