COP30 achieves climate agreement with no concrete targets on ending fossil fuels

The president of the 30th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (CoP30), André Correa do Lago, announced on Saturday the approval of the Global Mutirão (Global Collaboration) agreement, a document to reduce the use of fossil fuels, although without clear commitments or goals. Correa do Lago has since ordered the suspension of the plenary despite the objections of half a dozen delegations, which have openly expressed their protest against what they consider to be a position of little dialogue by the presidency. “I’m sorry. I have not seen the flags (…). Like many of you, I have not slept and this probably has not helped, nor has my advanced age” (Correa do Lago, 66 years old).

“Science prevails. Multilateralism has won,” proclaimed Brazilian President Luis Inácio (Lula) da Silva in a statement published after the agreement was announced. “In the year in which the planet exceeded 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels for the first time, and perhaps permanently, the international community had to choose: continue or surrender. We have chosen the first option,” he claimed.
