Public procurement will include requirements for zero- or reduced-carbon products

The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, has announced that the Executive will promote green public procurement through obligations and incentives, so that public procurement will include requirements for the purchase of products whose carbon footprint is zero or reduced. The objective of this initiative is for the public sector to be a tractor that leads the creation of green demand by national industry, as he pointed out.

“It is policies and actions like this that make our country a European benchmark in the ecological transition. And now, when others doubt, Spain is going to redouble its commitment to continue being at the forefront,” he said during his speech on Monday during Spain’s accession ceremony to the ‘First Movers Coalition’.

Public promotion and business collaboration

This public-private initiative was launched by the World Economic Forum to accelerate the ecological transition and reduce the volume of carbon emissions in sectors with difficulties in decarbonization. In his speech, Sánchez also advanced the allocation of 54 million euros for the development of a new battery gigafactory in Valladolid, built by Inobat Iberia, and which will generate 260 direct jobs and 500 indirect jobs, with a total investment of 700 million euros. In the auditorium of the Institute of Foreign Trade (ICEX), where the event was held, some representatives of the business world were present, such as the CEO of Endesa, José Bogás, or the CEO of Enagás, Arturo Gonzalo. Precisely, Sánchez explained that the adhesion to this initiative comes from the hand of “cutting-edge” and “brave” Spanish companies that are already part of the initiative, such as Egui, Iberdrola and Moeve, which will soon be joined by Acciona, which “are committed to sustainability as an engine of growth, employment and competitiveness”.
