The race against climate change loses momentum due to energy inequality

A new global report by Bureau Veritas on the energy transition warns that, despite record growth in the installation of renewable energies in recent years, the world continues to move away from the critical goal of limiting global warming to 1.5°C. The reason: an uneven transition that favors advanced economies and leaves behind the Global South, where two-thirds of the world’s population lives. The report reveals a worrying imbalance: while advanced economies and China account for 85% of clean energy investment, developing countries – which are home to two-thirds of the world’s population – receive only 15%. This “two-speed energy transition” hinders both global decarbonization and human development in vulnerable regions. “The global energy transition cannot be achieved without the Global South,” states the report, which bases its findings on a survey of more than 1,100 energy sector experts in 11 regions of the world.
