The UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has shown its support for “strong and rapid” action around the world to curb the pandemic caused by COVID-19 but admits that this will have implications by the time of finishing the Sixth Assessment Report of the effects of climate change on Earth.
Thus, it warns that the original schedule may change and that other adjustments to the adopted calendar may also occur as the situation evolves.
At a time of global public health crisis, the IPCC has indicated that both the Secretariat and the technical support units continue to operate remotely.
“The IPCC has been monitoring COVID-19 pandemic and related measures undertaken by governments. We support strong and swift action around the world, but please note that this has serious implications for the timely completion of the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report,” the think tank organization said in a statement.
Specifically, it refers to the ability of IPCC authors who voluntarily volunteer their time and expertise to the IPCC, to continue to work with the agreed timetable and experts and governments, who provide essential information on draft reports, to carry out their comments.
In that regard, the IPCC notes that it is “well aware” of the additional challenges faced by many people working from home, from caring for loved ones and communities to managing their primary employment in changing conditions, including the effort to move teaching online and conduct research, modeling and observation programs
He therefore thanked them for their “unprecedented” effort to support the work of the IPCC. The agency has also indicated that it is reviewing the coordination and format of the main author’s meetings and other activities in the coming months, as well as the delivery schedule of the Sixth Evaluation Report.
In this way, it warns that the original schedule may change and that other adjustments to the adopted calendar may also occur as the situation evolves.
