The world’s first offshore green hydrogen production platform opens in France

French developer of green hydrogen technology Lhyfe, together with its partners, has inaugurated the world’s first offshore renewable hydrogen platform in France.

The world’s first offshore hydrogen production platform, developed by Lhyfe in collaboration with Chantiers de l’Atlantique, will be operational at SEM-REV’s facilities, off the coast of Saint-Nazaire (France), by the end of 2022.

The electrolyser, which will produce green hydrogen from offshore renewable energy sources, has been installed on Geps Techno’s renewable energy hybrid floating platform, which combines solar, wind and wave power.

The platform will connect to several offshore renewable energy sources, including the Floatgen floating wind turbine, to ensure sufficient energy for green hydrogen production, Lhyfe has reported.

Once deployed, the platform will become the world’s first offshore renewable hydrogen production demonstrator, according to the partners.

“For this test, Lhyfe will not store hydrogen, as its goal is to demonstrate the possibility of producing gas at sea. The storage and transport or use of hydrogen will come later,” Geps Techno said earlier.

Recall that Chantiers de l’Atlantique and Lhyfe started a collaboration in June 2022 to develop renewable hydrogen production projects at sea with wind farms connected or not to the grid, with the aim of exploring green hydrogen production solutions with a minimum capacity of 100MW.

Under the agreement, Chantiers de l’Atlantique is responsible for the design, construction and installation of the platforms, while Lhyfe will be responsible for the design and operation of the renewable hydrogen production facilities.
