Expert group warns EU against carbon offsets for 2040 emissions target

While the accreditation of climate action in third countries “may seem cost-effective”, according to the advisory council, it entails “significant risks” to carbon markets and environmental integrity.

The European Commission is considering allowing the use of international carbon credits to try to achieve a new cut in emissions in the medium term, but the European Union’s (EU) independent advisory group on climate has warned that the credibility of the bloc’s climate policy is at stake.

The EU executive is expected to propose an intermediate climate target for 2040 in the coming weeks to guide the EU towards the goal of net zero emissions by 2050.
