Europe will remain unprotected without mandatory energy efficiency measures

The head of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Kristalina Georgieva, called on governments on April 15 to adopt measures to reduce energy demand and prepare for difficult times. The latest report by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) defends the strategic nature of renewables “as a national security imperative”. In the first place of the recommendations to policymakers, it cites the deployment of distributed renewable energies and mandatory measures to reduce energy demand.

When European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announces that Europe has paid an additional $22 billion in fossil fuel imports for the US-Israeli war against Iran, it only signals the tip of the iceberg. Eurostat data indicates that in 2025 the EU spent 336.7 billion euros on oil and gas imports. Compared to 2024, imports of liquefied gas increased by 35% in value and 24% in volume.
