EU agrees to reduce tolls for low-emission heavy goods transport until 2031

This update, which will still need the formal approval of the Twenty-seven and the plenary session of the European Parliament for its final adoption, seeks to align the standard with the new CO2 emissions targets for trucks and buses that will come into effect this July.
Negotiators from the Council (governments) and the European Parliament have reached a political agreement to reduce tolls for low-emission trucks and buses by 75% until 30 June 2031, as part of the revision of the toll system for heavy road transport, known as the ‘Euro vignette’.

This update, which will still need the formal approval of the Twenty-seven and the plenary session of the European Parliament for its final adoption, seeks to align the standard with the new CO2 emissions targets for trucks and buses that will come into effect this July. EU countries will have one year to adapt their toll systems to a new vehicle classification system based on CO2 emissions. Thus, EU countries that apply toll exemptions to zero-emission vehicles will be able to apply reductions of up to 75% for low-emission vehicles until the indicated date, with the possibility of maintaining a 50% reduction from July 2031.
