Spain would reduce emissions by 13% if it electrified industrial heat at low temperature

Investments in low-temperature industrial heat electrification are cost-effective and technically feasible, and could avoid the equivalent of 13% of total CO₂ emissions in Spain each year.
This is stated in the report ‘Decarbonisation of Spanish industry’, prepared by the think tank Oikos and presented this Wednesday in the Senate.

The report coincides with the announcement of a new European fund for industrial decarbonisation, endowed with 1,000 million euros, from which Spanish companies could benefit. The document proposes prioritizing electrification at low and medium temperatures (up to 500 degrees) as it is technically and economically attractive in the next 5 to 10 years. Oikos points out that segmenting industry by heat and temperature demands, together with a policy that combines economic and fiscal efficiency, will increase Spain’s energy compared to other European countries, taking into account Spain’s comparative advantage in the cost of generating decarbonised electricity thanks to the expansion of renewables.
