Electrification gains weight to strengthen energy security and reduce global emissions

The International Energy Agency (IEA) has positioned electrification as a growing avenue to strengthen energy security, improve competitiveness and reduce emissions, in a new special report that looks at the potential to accelerate electricity use in economies around the world.

The report provides a comprehensive assessment of how far and how quickly electrification can advance across sectors and regions, and what it means for energy security, affordability and emissions. The document, prepared at the request of Turkey, which is chairing COP31, and Australia, which is chairing the COP31 negotiations, assesses how far electrification can advance by sectors and regions. It also discusses its implications for climate goals, energy security and other associated benefits and trade-offs. The report will serve as the basis for the latest IEA-COP31 High-Level Dialogue on the Energy Transition, which is being held in New York in the context of the United Nations General Assembly, as countries consider adopting a global electrification target of 35%.
