Parliament supports simplifying European law against deforestation

The plenary session approved the simplification of the Deforestation Law, approved in 2023 to ensure that products sold in the EU do not come from deforested land.

• All companies must have one more year to comply with the new rules
• Simplified due diligence requirements for some traders and traders
• New revision of the law by April 30, 2026
MEPs voted on Wednesday to make concrete changes easier for companies, global players, member states and third countries to apply European deforestation rules. This decision comes after the last plenary session agreed to process the European Commission’s new proposal to simplify the legislation under the urgent procedure.

One more year of margin for companies

According to the approved text, companies will have an additional year to comply with the new European rules against deforestation. Large operators and traders will have to respect the obligations of the legislation from 30 December 2026, while smaller companies (less than fifty employees and an annual turnover of less than ten million euros) will have to do so from 30 June 2027. The new deadlines aim to ensure a smooth adaptation and reinforcement of the IT system that operators, traders and their representatives use to make electronic due diligence declarations.
