Among the 664 specialists chosen for the group’s three major climate reports, there are 10 who will represent Spain.
The world’s leading scientific panel on climate change has completed its selection process for the next major reporting cycle. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has designated 664 experts from 111 countries to participate in the Seventh Assessment Report (AR7). The participants, who will play the roles of lead coordinating authors, lead authors and reviewing editors, have been chosen after each country and observer organisation nominated its candidates, who this year have risen to 3,771. Of the 664 designated specialists, 51 per cent are from developing countries and economies in transition. In past assessments, the IPCC was criticized for its lack of diversity, as it prioritized authors from the global north. Europe, once again, has more representatives than anyone else (192, 29%), followed by Asia (18%), North America, Central America and the Caribbean (16%), Africa (104, 16%) and the Southwest Pacific (74, 11%). South America is the region with the lowest representation of authors with only 66 (10%). Another common criticism of the IPCC is the gender gap, an issue that, although it has been considerably reduced this year, is still present.
