Climate change could halve global GDP growth potential

When considering global temperature and not just local temperature, the economic damage of climate change is seven times greater, according to Adrien Bilal
Climate change will work as a massive ‘brake’ for the global economy, draining up to 50% of countries’ growth potential by the end of the century, warned Frenchman Adrien Bilal, who has just won an award for best young economist in his country.

“By analyzing the global temperature instead of the local one, we found that the economic damage is seven times higher than we thought,” said Bilal (35), a professor at Stanford University and winner of the Best Young Economist of 2026 award from Le Monde and the Circle of Economists of France. The study has its main novelty in the change of scale. “In previous analyses they were based exclusively on the local temperature; that is, the temperature in a given country. And that’s only part of global warming. It is far from representing the totality of the consequences of climate change,” he said, in an interview made by videoconference.
