83% of Spanish SMEs do not have their carbon footprint registered

Royal Decree 214/2025 imposes new obligations on large companies and public administrations to calculate and publish their carbon footprint

The entry into force of Royal Decree 214/2025, which establishes the obligation for certain companies and public entities to calculate and publish their carbon footprint and emission reduction plans, has highlighted a worrying reality. Specifically, most Spanish companies are not prepared to comply with these requirements due to the lack of adequate tools to measure and manage their emissions. According to Royal Decree 214/2025, large companies required to submit the Non-Financial Information Statement (NFIS), as well as state public administrations, must calculate their carbon footprint annually and establish specific emission reduction targets.
