U.S. calls for flexibility in European emissions rules to maintain LNG exports

From 2027, imports will have to meet defined emission intensity thresholds, and exporters will have to comply with reporting obligations from 2025.

The United States has asked the European Union for greater flexibility in the implementation of its new methane emissions standards, with the aim of ensuring that its liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports continue to flow to the continent. The request was formalized in a letter sent on October 28 and signed by Brad Crabtree, director of the Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Fossil Energy, and Joseph Goffman, head of the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Office of Air.
